Exercising gender study

My leisure activity is exercising. In this study, i researched genders and how much they exercise. 60% of the articles i found were about men exercising, and 40% were about women. Women are portrayed in the media to only exercise to look good and be healthy during and after their pregnancy, and men are portrayed to exercise to prevent harmful and dangerous falls in their old age, and to buff up and be confident and cocky and show off. Men are portrayed to be serious when they exercise and do really tough exercises, and women are portrayed to do light exercises like light weights and yoga and jogging. In this study, i learned that women and men are portrayed very differently by the media, and it may not always be true. I also learned that exercising is crucial during your old age and pregnancy.

Gender Project--Storyboard

Introduction:

Leisure Activity: Exercising

Prior to the study I thought that men mostly exercise.

I thought this because: (Think about your life experiences, and what has been told to you in life through the media, societal norms, or other influences)
  1. Many women i know like to diet but dont exercise
  2. Men i know like to exercise a lot
  3. Many times men are more muscular and toned than most women i see

Google:

In the news (Google searches)  I have seen men portrayed as: (in regards to my leisure activity)
Quote words, explain meaning
  1. ‘All of the young men began a diet in which their daily calories were cut by about 40 percent’ An article had a vague title about exercising, and it ended up being all about men.
  2. Regular exercise reduces older men's risk of serious injuries from falls, a new study finds. The article talks about how older men can prevent falling and hurting theirselves, but older women can also have the same risk.
  3. ‘Older men who exercise regularly are less likely to fall and hurt themselves, according to researchers at Yale University.’ This article talks about men and how its necessary for men to exercise in their old age, but not women.
  4. Study: Men who exercised before eating burned up to 8% more fat
But women burned 22% more fat if they exercised after eating a meal. This is because men are muscly and carbohydrates is their preferred fuel” This article mostly talks about men exercising.

In the news (Google Searches)  I have seen women portrayed as (in regards to my leisure activity)
Quote words, explain meaning
  1. ‘Pregnant women should exercise if at all possible to combat high blood pressure, excessive weight gain and oversized babies, London researchers say.’ Most  exercising articles about women are about exercising during their pregnancy, not generally.
  2. ‘Young women of reproductive age are a high-risk group for sedentary behaviour.’ Women are supposed to exercise during their pregnancy to prevent sedentary behavior and men to improve their health to look better.
    3)  ‘So it’s commendable to advocate for women to be physically active after giving birth.’ This article is also mostly about women exercising before and after their pregnancy, not just for confidence or their wellbeing.
4)  ‘Pregnant women shouldnt be lazy and let themselves go - they should do weights.’ Most of the articles i searched up for women exercising are about them exercising solely for their pregnancy, before, during, and after.

Out of the first 10 articles that appeared during the Google article search:
4/10 discussed mostly women participating in my leisure activity
6/10 discussed mostly men participating in my leisure activity

Analyze: I can make the following statements about the way gender is portrayed in the media in regards to my leisure activity.
1)Women exercise because theyre pregnant
2)men exercise to buff up, and look good
3) men should exercise in their old age to be healthier and reduce the risk of having a dangerous fall, but supposedly it doesnt work the same for women.
